MACE highlights 1970s images of 3rd Birmingham Central Library from ATV Today

On the 3rd September the new Library of Birmingham opened its doors to the public for the first time. In recognition of this, MACE has compiled a series of short films from ATV Today which show the building of the third Birmingham Central Library from 1970 to 1973 and shots from the day before it was officially opened by Harold Wilson on Saturday 12 January 1974.

The third Birmingham Central Library, which closed on Saturday 29 June 2013, was designed by John Hardcastle Dalton Madin to replace the existing library in order to make way for a new road layout in the city. His company were active in Birmingham for over 30 years. Some of the buildings his company designed have now been demolished including Birmingham’s Post and Mail Building. Birmingham Central Library will be demolished in 2014.

A circus for Lightwoods Park?

Talks are currently underway about bringing a circus to Lightwoods Park next year. Negotiations are in an advanced stage for one of the biggest big top companies in the country to Bearwood, either in the Spring or the Autumn.

Richard Marshall, Chair of the Friends of Lightwoods Park said, “This is a really exciting possibility. When we did Bearwood on Ice a few years ago, and then the Drive-in movies, we knew we wanted to bring another big event to Lightwoods. The circus – which is an entirely non-animal event – could be the answer.

“There are a few hurdles to cross, particularly around parking, but I think we will do it if we can, and hopefully we will have an announcement shortly. I am told the company we are talking to used to operate a circus in Lightwoods Park about 35-40 years ago, but I’m too young to remember…
